Heritage May 2019 Signature Auction

Day 1

The May 2019 Heritage signature auction started off with a very strong day overall. Let’s jump to a few specific lots and look at the results

The piece or the Auction was Frank Frazetta’s Egyptian Queen considered by most to be one of his top 5 works. It had a reserve of 5.4m with Buyers premium, and achieved 1 “bid” to sell. In reality this wasn’t so much an auction as a big profile fixed price listing. Still an absolutely monster price.

In the “things you don’t see every day” category, and  one of my favorite lots in the auction was the complete Hawkman #7 story which contains the first appearance of Zatanna. A complete silver age story with a first appearance of a fairly popular character. Wow! Can’t be many of these around. I had no idea how strong this would go, but I thought it would be around 100k, not sure if it would break it. It went a little higher and finished at $126k, which I think is about FMV for each page together individually.

There is a lot of Kirby in this auction, and the standout of today was a 2 page Captain America Origin sequence from Captain America #109. It finished at 72k ($36k per page).

Huge for a non action non costumed page, but how often do you get a chance at a Kirby Cap origin story page?

Maybe the most mind blowing result so far was the Michael Golden Avengers Annual #10 page. It is from a classic issue and contains the first actual appearance of Popular X Woman Rogue, however the $45.6k seems a bit silly. ( Does anybody see a coincidence here with “key” art going crazy?)

A Mike Mignola 2008 painted Hellboy Cover for Oddest Jobs went for a huge $36k. Obviously less common, is his painted work more desirable than his ink work? I am really interested to see what some of the early 90’s Hellboy cover would bring at auction.

We will finish off day 1 by looking at the Frank Miller Daredevil #180 page. Frank Miller classic art such as Daredevil and Wolverine has been on a huge tear over the past year or two and this result is no exception. A nice A- or so page, $40.8k puts it into Dark Knight category price wise(although lets see what the next dark knight pages sell for.) I can only imagine what this page would sell for if it was DD vs Bullseye.

Day 2 and 3

Multiple Perez Infinity Gauntlet pages went up for sale and prices remained strong. It will be interesting to see if demand still rises as the MCU has finished its Thanos arc or if prices plateau or decline. No the art was effected by movie hype mores than these pages. Will the story become a classic, or will it people forget about it. I have no idea myself!

A JRJR complete interior ASM story was on the auction block, with some Venom, Spidey and a first appearance(Anti-Venom) which the splash was also used as a second printing cover. I think the buyer got a fair price at $16.8k.

2 Erik Larsen Amazing Spider-man pages(1 splash and one panel page) both broke five figures a piece. Extremely strong results. Still “cheap” compared to Mcfarlane pages, but wow. Are Mark Bagley pages next?

Thanks for reading our coverage of the auction. Stay tuned for more auction reports!
